Manuel Azevedo — Basketmaker

Manuel Azevedo is a third-generation basketmaker from the island of Terceira, Azores. From his home in Taunton, MA, he uses willow plants he emigrated with in the late 1970's to continue the year-long process of growing, harvesting, and finally weaving traditional baskets. His work is on view in the permanent collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford, MA.

This short film was commissioned by the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art & Design, I have been working as a graphic designer and art director for over 18 years. For the past 12 years I have been an in-house designer at the RISD Museum in Providence, RI—working on a vast array of projects from exhibitions and publications, to marketing, web design, wayfinding and video.

My work has been recognized by the Type Director’s Club, Print Magazine, the Society for Experiential Graphic Design, the Webby Awards, and the Association of Art Museum Curators.
